Green Cove is looking for mature, outgoing individuals who love the outdoors and can effectively communicate positive values to young people. Ideal candidates should be able to teach one or more of our activities. Our average staff age is around 25, with the youngest being 18 and completing at least one year of college. We maintain a camper-to-staff ratio of better than four to one, allowing counselors to have a meaningful impact on campers.
We have high expectations for our staff but provide ample support, guidance, and opportunities for growth. Green Cove, along with our sister camp Mondamin, spans 800 acres and is close to wilderness areas for paddling, hiking, biking, and climbing (e.g., Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala River Gorge). We are conveniently located near Asheville, NC, and Greenville, SC, with Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC, just a 2-3 hour drive away.
In your role as an activity instructor, you’ll be a part of a team led by an “Activity Head” who will coordinate schedules and teaching methods. We use activities as a means of communication, as a tool for stimulating growth. We teach fairly high-level skills (i.e. whitewater canoeing, rock climbing, extended backpacking, etc.) but we are just as interested in the beginner as in the advanced camper.
All staff are required to have current CPR and First Aid training. All waterfront staff are required to have Life Guard Training. Trip leaders must have at least a Wilderness First Responder. We provide these courses during our orientation at the beginning of each summer, and may agree to subsidize part of your costs if you get the training elsewhere.
Salaries are individually determined based on your age, experience and skills. Our salaries compare favorably with most other camps and rise as you prove yourself.
Food and Lodging are covered by us for the time that you work here, as all of us sleep here at camp and eat in a common dining room. Limited quarters are available for married couples. Inquiries from teachers, retirees are especially invited.
Travel expenses are covered by the counselor.
You have 36 hours per week leave (a day and 2 nights). You are expected to be in camp when not on leave or a camping trip. Special leave, as for a wedding, can usually be arranged, but must be agreed upon well ahead of time (usually prior to camp opening).
Employment begins with orientation and staff training, which gets started in late May, and ends at the close of our last session, in mid-August. See the dates & rates page to find out the specific dates for this year. Orientation begins approximately one week before the start of our first session.
