Day Summer Camp Counselor – All Levels Full Time Temporary

The University of Maine’s 4-H Camp and Learning Center is seeking Day Camp Counselors to create a fun, inclusive, and engaging summer camp experience for youth. Counselors are responsible for leading activities, fostering community, and prioritizing the safety and well-being of campers. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in outdoor education while making a lasting impact on campers’ lives.

Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver hands-on natural history and outdoor skills lessons, including topics such as ecology, wildlife, and conservation.
• Actively engage with campers during activities, recreation, and meals.
• Lead four one-hour elective activities each week.
• Supervise campers at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being.
• Participate in camp events, including opening and closing ceremonies, special theme days, and evening programs.
• Assist with daily operations, including meal service, chores, and maintenance.
• Model healthy living, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
• Follow all health and safety protocols to maintain a secure environment for campers and staff.

Qualifications:

• Level One:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • No previous experience is required.
• Level Two:
  • At least two years of experience working with youth in a camp or related setting.
  • OR a relevant certification such as Lifeguard or Wilderness First Aid.
• Level Three:
  • Three or more years of experience teaching or working with youth in outdoor settings.
  • OR a relevant certification such as Lifeguard or Wilderness First Responder.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Preferred:
  • Passion for working with children in an outdoor, adventure-based setting.
  • Strong decision-making skills to ensure safety and engagement.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before the start date).
  • Ability to lead outdoor activities while carrying a small backpack with supplies.

Day Camp Counselors work a full summer schedule from June 13th, 2025 to August 15th, 2025. Day Camp Counselors have the option to reside on-site throughout the season, with structured time off each week.

Compensation and Benefits:

• $3,150 – $4,500 for 9 weeks, based on experience
• Rustic and shared housing is available for those opting to reside on-site.
